sargasum

Does anyone have it growing in their tank.
I have some that started growing from a small piece of LR and now it is about 3 & 1/2 inches .
I am wondering if it will continue to grow or what ?
Anyone with any long term experience with it ?
Thanks much !!!!

I had some brown sargasm in my refugium, but it disappeared. I think hermits that out grew my tank made a snack out of it. I liked the way it looked, and even better, it floated so it didn't put down invasive, hard to get rid of roots.

There are several varieties, and yours may be different from what I had.

Hi FISHme,
Will Sargassum grow?????
Check this out:
This is about 1 1/2 feet long. I never saw it on the rock it came with it just grew out from it. I actually have 2 more long strands like this on the other side of my tank.
I had this stuff in my other tank before and it died out. I recall reading that it will die out in time.I don't remember where I read this though.

I will echo responses above. Sargassum grew like crazy at first, quickly reaching surface even in my 30" tall tank. Then it spreads across surface choking out all light, had to constsntly trim and export. However, after about six or eight months growth slowed to almost nil and while I still have a good ammount I haven't removed any for quite some time.

Saragassum is a brown Algae if I am not mistaken. As such it needs iodine to survive. Maybe after 6-8 months it dies out in tanks that do not supplement with this.

Nice photo Capn'K,
I was dosing Iron for the past several months but recently quit.
I always thought sargassum would be cool to have growing in a tank.
