He might be molting, and he is diggin in the sand to protect himself, Id make sure there are some larger shells for him to change into.
In one of my tanks, I have a large (golf ball size) hermit crab. He has always been quite active. Yesterday afternoon, I watched him go to a corner of the tank and actually dig himself into the sand. His shell is almost completely covered. He is very much alive as I can see his eyes and "feelers" moving, but I've never witnessed this before, and wondered if anyone might have some insight. I was tempted to pick him up and move him but I'm sure he's up to something natural. thanks for any input. JWT
It aint' pretty being easy.

I have the mind of a 5 year old and own a fire extinquisher you cant imagine the things i do.
Thanks. I though he might be molting but wasn't sure. I've never seen one bury themself before. now I have some other shells in the tank that he has checked out from time to time but he has never moved into one of them. Should I put some different ones in that might be more to his liking, or will he take over one the the existing shells? JWT
