Question Ich Treatments

Can anyone suggest the best way to treat ich in a reef tank? I have tried to catch my angel twice, and she bolts into the rock and hides? She is eating well, so I have thought of the food soaked in garlic oil. I have also heard of some treatments that are reef safe? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

If the fish is eating that is a good thing. It would be harder to help treat a sick, not eating, fish.
I would feed the fish food that has been soaked in liquid vitamin such as selcon or zoe on a very regular basis.

imo the captain and naser have given you good advice.keep the water quality as near perfect as possible, keep the temp at 83 and totally STABLE!feed LOTS,small amounts often, of vitamin soaked food,i use combisan ,in addition to the ones captaink suggested(selcon is a must for me).
basically the "happier" the fish, the better his chances, ime
good luck

I agree with all of the above but how about a biological cleaner as an option too. Try a cleaner shrimp or some neon gobies...

Oh ya, I wouldn't use any chemicals in my tank either...just because I personally, never can really trust them...HTH

Great, thanks for the advice. How about Garlic soaked food? Two of my LFS's have told me to stay away from soaking food in anything, and just use chemicals to treat the tank. I am going to stay awya fro that, but I can't find the combisan, selcon or zoe, anywhere???

Smile using garlic

Many have had success with the garlic method. It seemed to help with the outbreak I had last year. Most say to use the Koylic brand of garlic oil available in most GNC health stores. An alternate method that makes sence to me is to squeaze the FRESH cloves to get fresh oil. An article I belive by Horge tends to promote this http://www.geocities.com/horge1218/garlic.html HTH.....Mike

the evidence pointing to garlic being effective against ich is anecdotal at best ,but then again maybe it doesnt harm the fish .as for the supplements you should be able to find at least two of them in any lfs worth its salt the kent zoe ,in particular should be easy to find.if you cant find selcon locally ,i suggest you buy some mail order.hth

I needed a ick treatment on 1 occasion. I used the koylic garlic and it took care of it fast. I would soak the food in 10-15 drops of it, or just enough to cover the food good.

I now will add a few drops of the garlic a couple times a week to the food. I also add a few drops of Centrum liquid vitamins that can be purchased at wal-mart for about 8.00 for a large bottle. Same basic stuff as the aquarium vitaimins just a lot cheaper.

Selcon is rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), stabilized Vitamin C, and cyanocobalmin (B-12) marine fish "do better" when they are fed lipid-enriched foods, and fish fry survival rates improve dramatically. These are qualities I dont think you will find in youre average multi-vitamin.Selcon is IMO,a proven product and should be on every marine fish keepers shelf.

Yea, I gotto go with OR here, I checked the label on my GNC "Mega Men" daily's and I just don't see a thing about omega 3 fatty acids! I'm stickin' with selcon. Getting back to the "ick" thing, I think it's just a fact of life if you are going to keep fish, especially if you are prone to buying a new one now and then. The only real "treatment" imo is the basics, maintain the best water conditions you you can, try to start with healthy fish from reliable source, good nutrition, and quarantine all new aquisitions. Personally I think the numerous filter feeders in an established reef help to control the free swimming stage of cryptocaryon and that cleaners such as lysmata amboinensis and neon gobys help with the adult form. Works for me. Oh yea, low fish loads too, don't give in to that "just one more" desire! Good luck.

Did you ID the stressor yet? maybe a change in water quality, temperature, new fish addition, etc?
As said above many times already, diet is very important. A weak immune system makes the fish more prone to attacks of any kind, be it parasitic, bacterial, etc
Thumbs up for Selcon and a varied diet.
