How much LR should I get for my new 168 gal. tank? I presently have a 6" DSB, with reef racks. I thought by having the DSB & racks I would require less LR. Should I still go with the 1-2 lbs per gal. or if the LR is a nice size, good quality, with tons of crevices, should I go with the amount of space it will cover rather than the weight?

SUE!!! its been a while....been real busy...Ok i remember reading somewhere that about 1/3lb per gallon is all you need for a natural filtration, im not sure I believe that cuz I have seen many ppl that have more success with more LR. Most ppl go with 1 - 1.5 lbs per gal. on the avg. If you get good size rocks with a variety of shapes then you can do some great aquascaping and you can make 50lbs look like 100lbs when you are done...and thus creating a VERY porous rockscape. I have about 1.5lbs per gallon in my tank, very porous design but it looks like a tank full of rock

I agree with Scubadude, 1-1.5lb is more than enough. You need to save room for all the corals

Agree with scubadude about good size rocks. My centerpiece is about 30 pounds by itself, and I am really pleased with how the tank looks.

SCETT316,
An established DSB is actually much more efficient than live rock as a “filtration” system. Therefor, the old “rule of thumb” for how much live rock you need is more or less irrelevant. You only need as much live rock as is required for the “look” that you are trying to achieve. Regards, Scott ------------------ The definition of an expert is a washed-up drip under pressure.
