I startyed a question thread somewhere about wheather or not to feed sps corals. The response was that many did feed but to me it seemed like not a real necessity. After the thread I now turn oiff the skimmer and add phytoplankton to the tank periodically. I do try to target the sps when I add it. I cant say its all that important but cant hurt. I think the colt coral benefits from it most.

Coralman,
Are you trying to target one particular sps coral? Or are you trying to find out whether it is necessary to target an entire tank full of sps? In either case, Bornemans Aquarium Corals book rather extensively provides the reader with a lot of great info about feeding corals as a whole in a closed system. There is in fact a recipe for a food which he feeds his tank. HTH.

I guess that's it.

Coralman,
Generally one does not need to "target feed" SPS corals. However, I do target feed my acros w/ a little DT's from time to time. I simply turn the pumps off and shoot a little "cloud" of DT's around them. They seem to do fine by it. FWIW

I agree, I use DT's, and some of the ESV dried phyto from time to time. Seems to do good enough.

Guys, don't worry I'm sure there's no condescension intended. Eveyone has to realize that the type on the screen is sometimes hard to find emotion in, and its really easy to get the wrong "tone of voice" from someones text boards. We're all friends here.

SPS feed on zooplankton, not phytoplankton. The DTs is not directly feeding you SPS, but it is feeding some of the microfauna, that inturn feeds your SPS.

I have made up my own concoction of brine, scallops, oysters, and shrimp and maybe some zoecon all thrown into a blender with a tad of tank water and I make two batches one with little chunks and one that is finely minced up (keep the blender on for a while) and the finely minced up on seems to be taken by most of my acros, however I do dose DT's periodically too.....I feed my acros maybe every other day. Hi All,

Play nice everyone!

I think this was a question of semantics.

When I feed my SPS corals, I tend to think of it as “braodcast” feeding, ie turn the return pumps off and add phytoplakton etc.

I tend to use the word “target” feed when I hand feed my SPS corals “meaty” foods like shrimp and silversides.

Regards,

Scott
