Red face UH OH!!!!

i just topped off my tank, and tested salinity 1.027 ?!?!? WTF!!! from 1.024-1.027!!! how'd it get that high? are you supposed to add salt to water when topping off? the water i put in was at 1.020 why would it make it go that high?

Nope, you most certainly are NOT supposed to add salt to water that is intended to replace evaporation. You could add Kalkwasser, if you wanted to, but not salt.

P.S. - Salt does not evaporate, only pure H2O evaporates.

You are supposed to topoff with fresh water (No salt) Topping off replaces evaporated H2O. When water evaporates, salt is left behind, and you dont want to add any more salt. Hence the rise in salinity. HTH.

hmmm. I don't think a sg of 1.027 would kill snails unless they weren't acclimated properly or the salinity changed REALLY fast. The sg of natural sea water us usually right around 1.027 (taken from a navy sonar tech - figure that was a good source). I keep my tank at about 1.025 to 1.026 all the time(at a temp of about 82 degrees).

But yep, you have to use fresh water for top off unless you are trying to raise your salinity - as you found out.

I'd probably drop it a little bit - I wouldn't wan't it to go too much higher if you get a lot of evaporation and forget to add top off water. Personally, I'd try to get it down to 1.025.

Also, a tip for acclimating snails. Put them on the glass just above the water surface - they'll go in on their own when they've acclimated. The main problem with snails acclimating is when their internal salinity level is too low when compared to the salinity of the water. By leaving them above the water line, moisture in their body will evaporate raising their own internal salinity. They will enter the water on their own when their ready. Never lost a snail that I've acclimated this way.

Yes I have had success with Raven's tip on acclimating snails.....I used to just throw them in and they would sit in the same place for a day or two....now that I put them at the water line or close to it they are active immediately. It is an EXCELLENT tip and I highly recommend it, but then again anything raven says I trust!

so do you acclimate them then put them above the water surface? or do you just do that right away

Thanks guys - I read it on one of the boards a while back. It works well. I float my snails before I put 'em on the glass, but I'm not sure it's really necessary. Sometimes they stay above the water line for quite a while.
