Angry stupid canister

I come home after 2 days on vacation and i look at my tank, everything looks fine, wait, the canister isn't going so i check to see if it is plugged in( ya never know) yep it is . So i think hey i'll take it apart .I lift off the lid and i almost passed out from the smell of hydrogin sulfide or something not sure. the smell was only in the canister i know it was because it stoppped and became anaerobic but got any ideas on what caused it to stop?

The impeller could have broke or the motor could have burned out. Maybe a short in the wiring in the motor casing? There are a lot of possibilities.

Just be glad the motor sits outside of the water.

always have everything grounded i believe is the lesson here. im so scared of things breaking in my tank be it the heater or a pump ive got everything on a gfi breaker and grounded powerbars with two sets of grounds in both the sump and the tank. although im not sure that a cannister filter would pop it? hum.
