I dont understand that. If your heater was off and your fans working on your lighting I dont see why you have a 15 degree variance in your temp. Thats a horrible thing to happen. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find out what caused the temperature difference.

You mean the heater was off? Unplugged or did it burn out after getting stuck on.

Probably a long shot but what kind of pumps/powerheads are you using? I assume your "rotating powerheads" are Power Sweeps but I do not recall hearing any concerns about heat from them.

How did you cool the water down, if anything? Did the mushrooms or zoanthids appear stressed?

It does kinda sound like a pump went bad. Was it hotter than normal outside? Is the tank on an exterior wall? How long have you had the tank? Did you add anything new in the last few days?

    Alright heres my morning report.
    Fish are all A ok.
Another Death my Flower Pot, gone,
The Mushrooms look stressed still but they are tough gonna pray for them to make it, my Polyps I dont know, time will tell if they open up or not, if they dont *sigh* guess i will just have to take em out and start over,
Im gonna rearrange the rock some more tonite since i had to tear it down to get at the shrimps bodies,

I had that shrimp for almost a year and the other for 2 months, they both would come and crawl on my hand and such, they were soo cool, they had perosnality, like most of the creatures in this hobby... Im currently searching for more Cleaner shrimp, maybe a banded and some fire shrimp (pepermint) we'll see tho..

My PH, Aquaclear 500 and Prizim were all on last nite and the temp was at a normal 78-80... the PH's were on a good 12 hours as well so I dont think my PH burnt up or died,

    I just dont get it..

How'd i cool it down someone asked, well I took the lights off and glass off and had a fan blowing towards the tank.. when i got home at 330 the tank was at 95, when i got home from dinner at 630 it was around 85, and at 9 is was around 82. so, needless to say im baffled, i just dont get it.
could this have been a bacteria bloom on the rock? I know a month ago the tank hit 90 cause the heater was on and it was hot outside, but from that day i have had the heater off... this is far too strange.

I guess we all get hit with these sudden shocks with things,
I say my loss is around 150 bucks right now worth of coral, and life.

Good news is i upgraded my lighting while i was out. I now have 2x55 PC JBJ lights, They have two fans in them so i wont worry about them making things warm.. Gonna have to increment them in, I only had 40 watts total on the tank untill last nite and OMG is there a Difference when i turned on the PC's WOW! they are nice and bright...

I'll keep everyone posted on this tragic event,
    take care all

I know this is prolly a reach but here goes: Check your calcium levels in your tank. If it is significantly higher than what is considered "normal" levels of 420, this could contribute to the increase temp. Kalkwasser or CaOh when added to tank will react and cause a temp. spike in your tank. It's worth looking into!...Gary

djscott - I wonder if the glass over your tank might have played a part. It traps a layer of air between the water and the glass and acts as a greenhouse. It doesn't let heat escape as fast as it builds up in this layer(heat probably fueled from the lights). I put glass covers on my tank one day and the temp shot up about 10 degrees because of it.

you should keep that glass off atleast during the day if not all the time. your tank is basically sweating. leave it open all that heat evaporates and goes away. leave it on and all that heat keeps building. well thats my guess.
