heres the scoop, i was taking pics of all my hitchhikers for that contest of reefcentral.com, when i noticed my some of my xenia was shriveled up. On closer observation, i found nothing out of the ordinary, then i saw "haze" rising in the water, and E=MC^2. I imediately figured out that that is why my conches are pushing up daisies... My heater was messed up, and leaking some "Mirage" looking liquid.
I imediately shut everything down but a powerhead, i hate to think that my tank will go without a heater, but there is no way around it... I dont know how long it has been happening, but everything seems fine. What go should i pray to? I have to blame my ignorance, because i thought the label said min. water line, but it doesnt how likely is catastrophe? should i do a water change? if so, i wouldnt be able to until tomorow that xenia stalk looks horrible! the rest are fine, but one looks ready to fall off the rock! please help! tell me what to do, how to fix this!! Also, my Lawn mower blenny has what appears to be an air bubble in its dorsal fin?! towards the front of the dorsal fin.. ill definatly post a pic of whatever it is tomorow... please help mark |

ok now that im done cracking up(sorry) light rays undergo refraction, i.e., are bent, in passing from a medium of one density into another of different density, hot water is less dense than cold, hence the "mirage" you saw around youre heater.
you can relax everything is perfectly normal it was just so ironic that you called it a mirage ![]() |

I have no idea what the "haze/mirage" liquid is, but it doesn't sound good!If I were in this situation, I'd do a 50% water change ASAP. Also, I would skim full blast, and add activated carbon. This might not do alot of good, but it wouldn't hurt. The idea is to get this stuff out of your system quick like. After the first water change, I'd do ~20% water changes at 24 hour intervals for a week or so. Hope this helps

its classic
fishkid, let me guess you turned off all the circulation so you could get a good pic?dont forget that the hot water conig off the heater will actually rise.youll see it any time there is no current and the heater is on. |

I think Im gonna stop posting preaty soon
everytime i post, i wind up feeling below dumb! everything is fine now, the reason it hapened, is because my heater is betwwen two large rock walls, so the only current that reaches it comes from the surface i got some nice pics though ![]() |

FishKid you should have your heater in an area where there is decent water flow to keep from getting hot and cold spots in the tank.
If the heater isnt get any flow around it you will just end up with warm water near the heater and rest of the tank will be cooler. |

did you ever look down the street or highway or the hood of a car and see the heat rising, thats what you saw, why dont you place the heater next to or opposite a power head....

Hey Fishkid,I'd bet almost every reefer you ever meet has made a similarly silly mistake. It's better to err on the side of caution. When I read your post, I pictured a glowing green nuclear waste looking ooz wafting around in your tank. I was laughing at myself as much as I was laughing at at you. BTW good luck in the photo contest!
