attaching xenia to rock
i am not sure if this belongs here....but.....
i have some small pieces of xenia that have broken off..and i want to attach them to some rock... i have tried using plastic cable ties..but they dont conform well to the rock..so the pieces get loose..i have used some cotton string wrapped around the rock and it doesnt work.. any suggestions.. i was thinking of trying sewing thread..but was worried it may cut the xenia.. any ideas are welcome.. thanks... what works best for you.. i am attaching the xenia to pieces of rock...that is actually base rock with little growth on it.. thanks.. |

![]() That is exactly what I use....and try to put it in a fairly low current for a while dont be afraid too much that you will hurt the xenia....most xenia is darn near indestructable. Try to put the thread in between two branches (I have even pierced the xenia if there is not 2 branches) then loop it through a hole in a piece of rubble rock....the xenia will attach and I have even seen it grow over the thread...after it attaches I cut the thread (at least the parts not grown over) I squirt a tad of iodine in the tank to help with the healing process any time i do fragging. If they are really small pieces and difficult to tie, staple or mutilate you can just put a bunch of rock rubble into a short drinking glass and drop in the frags. Set it a low flo corner of tank so they don't wash out and they will attach in a day or two. I have even used cereal bowls with lots of rock and a dozen frags, I cover these with eggcrate to keep them in.

Superglue Gel.... works for me...dry off the bottom of the Xenia and the spot on the rock 2where you want the Xenia... Apply a small dab of gel to rock, then stick Xenia to gel.... I do it all the time and haven't had 1 come loose yet...

Any of you know if you can put Xenia in a system running 24 hour light? I have tried to frag some smaller pieces, but if I put them in my display tank something always manages to disturb it. My sump is a perfect place, but would defeat the purpose if the constant light would stress out the Xenia.

Here's another idea: tulle. A good friend of mine who frags his xenia regularly uses little pieces of tulle wrapped around the base and secured with a rubber band (not over the coral). Tulle is the stuff that bridal veils are made of, and you can get it at a fabric store. Just another thought.

I stick a toothpick through, near bottom, and elastic band toothpick to rock. It takes about 5 days to attach then take off elastic and slowly pull out toothpick.
