    Post Peppermint Shrimp Babies

    Hey Folks,

I have in my reef tanks dozens of baby shrimp. Some much larger than others, indicating they are either better competitors for food, or from a different clutch of eggs. I'm assuming they must be peppermint shrimp, since they are the only "pairs" of shrimp in this tank. Before anyone suggests that these are amphipods, I assure you, they are not. Does anyone else here have any experience with raising these little fellows to adult hood?

I just created a ecosystem type sump after reading of Spasse's success with it, and have noticed many of these babies have "migrated" down to the caulerpa regions of the sump/ecosystem filter. They are free from predation in this area, so I'm hopeful that they will survive, if they have adequate nutrition.

It's possible they are mysis shrimp. A good animal to have in the tank. I've got thousands of them in my tank. They are tiny, clear with relective eyes, they swim just above the substrate or on the surface of the LR. I have never seen mine swimming in open water. The largest I have seen is maybe 1/4".

Kathy, if you check on Mysis, I think you'll find they are a fresh water shrimp. However, Mysid are the salt water equivalent.

I see small shrimp (am quite positive they are shrimp larvae), but they never come to full adulthood. I see them more often in my 55 lagoonal tank than in my 90 SPS. They can be raised, but I don't see it happening in a active tank with predators.

I also had a peppy have a litter, i am 100% they are peppermint shrimp as i watched it go to the surface and release all of the little guys. But as perryinca said i doubt they will make it very long in our closed system.
