Any fish breeders out there?

I am interested in sharing experiences with anybody succesfuly breeding anything- clowns, cardinals, dotybacks, seahorses, even pepermint shrimp. For that matter I would even like to talk to someone who has mastered rotifer cultures. Not sucessful but trying? OK, lets work this out together.

Just setting up my system. I am extremely new to marine aquarium, if that's alright with you, I would be interested to setting up breeding tanks, even for corals.

I used to breed freshwater tropical fish, but even that was more than 3 decades ago.

Thumbs up

I have some past experience setting up and maintaining rotifer cultures, but I don't think I'd call myself a "master".

Jerry, welcome to Reefland, you will find a lot of helpful folks here. Glad to meet another "old guy", so many here seem so young and it hurts that they know more than we do! Yea, a lot of us came from FW. My first SW tank (1969) was an old Metaframe with the metal painted with my mothers unwanted nail polish. Water, sand and critters came from summer beach trip. Lasted maybe a week. Anyway you will be propagating corals in no time and I will be posting breeding success/failure on a regular basis if you are interested. It's really the pinacle of the hobby for me, produce a $500 fish you can maybe sell for three bucks! It just doesn't get any better than that!!

"Master" Penguin- did you start with live culture? Have you ever tried starting from "resting" cysts? Did you culture greenwater? What type? Are you tired of questions?... seriously, I could use all the help I can get. Mind telling a little about your rotifer culturing experiences? ....david

David,

I've started cultures both ways--with resting cysts and live rotifers. I also cultured microalgae (Nanochloropsis, Isochrysis, Chlorella). My setup consisted of ten gallon tanks for the rotifer cultures, and 2L plastic soda bottles for the microalgae. I was able to maintain these for about 6 months with one rotifer culture crash during that period. My goal was to start a clownfish captive breeding operation, but because of a career change I had to move and give it up. Someday, when I have the time and the money, I'd like to try it again. I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with plankton culture and fish breeding also. Let me know what else I can do to help you, I'd be happy to. Feel free to e-mail me or use the forums.

It is not them (pun intended) young but it’s this bag of bones; and the most painful part is my gray matter has just past puberty ….. can’t even keep up with myself. Now that I’ve embarked on this salty journey, it’s like going back to kindergarten …. Constant raps, back up my head from these pesky youthful rascals.

Actually, during my time it was a little higher tech. than that ….. I had my tanks framed in heavy aluminum L frames will see if I can dig up a pic or two ..... that's if the silverfish haven't been at it again

Once I get my main tank going I am going to try my hand at building my own tanks, starting with acrylic … of cos

What would be a good “$500 fish” to begin with? Another, one your get rich quick programs…huh

I’m in!

Looks like it's just gonna be us three, Pen, Jr. and David old chap

Pen have you seen batman lately? Looks like you've be round a few times too.

Cheers old chap

(not me) Jerry
