abnormal brain activity?

3 months or so ago, I looked into my tank one morning before the lights came on, and saw a white dot in the center of my open brain coral. I took a closer look and the white dot turned out to be a hermit crab that was about 2/3 of the way inside the coral. I observed for about an hour, and eventually the coral "spit" the crab out.

Since then I have seen this behavior at least 10 times. The coral is doing great, and I haven't noticed a decrease in my H crab population.

I am curious if anyone else had ever seen this? are the crabs trying to eat the coral, or vice versa? Or, is this some sort of symbiotic relationship?

It's the wild kingdom in action
