Question What is this thing? Where did it come from?or could it have...

Sup yall,
What is this thing? (in the upper left corner)Sorry the pics kinda fuzzy. Bowfronts don't take to cameras very well. I think I know what it is just want a confirmation. How do I get rid of it? Will it spread?

Its looks like Aptasia to me. Do you have only one? I think I'm looking at the right thing.......If I'm right, I would mix up a small bit of water and calcium hydroxide (kalkwasser) Make it thick, then inject that little bugger with the mixture. That should kill it with no problem.

Angry

They are horrible. They will sting your corals and spread like crazy. If you accidentally break them apart they will form even more little anenomes faster.
I always have trouble injecting them because they seem to shrink away when I get the needle close.

That particular anemone isnt really a big deal. I have one of them in my 30 gal thats almost 4" in diameter. As it got bigger it started to turn more purple with white bands on its tentacles. And it doesnt spread as prolificaly as the classical aiptasia. Its a rather interesting anemone to watch.

Im not 100% sure its aiptasia

There are a few other creatures that resemble aiptasia but are different A Corkscrew Anenome is one of them and i think that this could be one of them....This is gulf rock isnt it SHOG? I have a book that has tons of pictures of all the gulf inhabitants and you wouldnt believe some of the anenomes that resemble aiptasia. SHOG does it have white and brown in the anenome? and also the tentacles very much resemble a corkscrew from what i can see

if aiptasia, you're not alone - i've got a full bloom in m150 gal reef going to try aiptasia eating machine - berghia nudabranch - at $25 a pop - thinking about breeding them.

I agree with scuba, i dont think its a "true" aiptasia. At least not how we think of aiptasia. Perhaps a close relative. BUt i can say its not a corkscrew anemone.

it looks like aiptasia to me,though it also looks a bit strange(i suggest posting to dr.ron).have you "mangled " it at all ,one time ,after unsuccesfully trying to remove an aiptasia my scraping it off,it looked kinda like that.

Nope I have never touched it. I have had the tank set up for a little over a year and it just showed up about @ 2 months ago.

I just went and took a close look at it again. The larger/longer tenticales do have a "cork screw" on the tips. They also seem to have white rings around them too. Hope this can be of some help. Thanks for all the input this far.

mapman, if you want info on breeding berghia, I suggest talking to the guys at Inland Aquatics. They hooked me up with all the info I need to breed berghia. Eric Borneman also had a recent thread at RC where he discussed his breeding methods for berghia. It is not hard at all to get them to breed, its raising the eggcases that is giving me trouble.
