Phosphate sponge - Green Star Polyps
I have green star polyps in the tank and some red slime. I made water chages trying to get out some of the phosphates buyt no luck. The red slime keeps spreading.
Ran out of Phosphate test so I don't know how much is in the tank, but I have a Phosphate sponge that I would like to use. I read that Aluminum oxide in the Phosphate sponge can adversely affect the green start polyps. Is that correct? If so, how do I get rid of the Phosphate? |

yes aluminum hydroxide can be harmful to some invertebrates, particularly sarcophyton ,and i beleive ive read reports of it harming polyps as well.i wouldnt do it.have you considered dosing kalk and/or a better skimmer?

Will red slime go away if phosphates go to almost zero?
I have a good skimmer (Berlin Turbo XL) and my nitrates are less than 10. I am addting Seachem Reef Advantage Calcium and Liquid Calcium. The alkalinity is about 4 and Calcium at 400. I have a dying anenome. I have not idea why she is not doing so good, she was thriving and even split few months ago, but I cannot get to take her out without taking the tank apart. Is her decay cusing my phosphates and Nitrates to go up. Do I just wait it out? |

I dont know about phospates but the decay could be affecting your water params definately. Its a shame. I love my anemone. You are going to have to take the tank apart if the anemone dies completely right? So why not go in now to get it to save it if there is a chance of it living.
Another solution for phosphate removal is caulerpa. It would add some nice greenery to your tank if in main and if you have a sump, just toss some in there with a small light and give it time to grow and viola, no more phosphates ![]() j |

The only thing that helped me with red slime, in addition to getting the params as good as you can get, is to turn the lights off and cover the tank for 3 days. Doesn't hurt fish or inverts.

Just my 2 cents here,
I recently had the same question. I sent emails to Aquarium Pharm. and Kent Marine regarding their phosphate sponges. Aquarium Pharm. does have Aluminum oxide in their sponge. Kent Marine does not have this in their sponge HTH, CaptK |
