hermit crab shell removal

Just curious as to how many folks remove the leftover crab shells that are too small to be used. I have several small ones that my crabs have long outgrown. While they look natural, it's starting to get a bit cluttered. any opinions?

I pile mine behind my rockwork and in my sump for 'pods to grow in, many of them seem to like the shells. I move them about once in awhile to clear any settled detrius. The crabs also enjoy picking through them. I try to keep them cleared off the open sand bed for the most part though.
