expensive sand

I want to purchase either some aragonite or south down. My LFS is selling a 20lb bag of aragonite for $40. My first thought was D@mn that's expensive! or is that the normal price for the stuff? I just don't want to get ripped off. Anyone know where I could go to find a better deal than that?

That is very expensive for aragonite. Southdown is around $4 a bag. Check your local Home Depot, they carry it.

Southdown is aragonite.....some say that the makeup of Southdown makes it the best sand to use. I used it in my tank.

South Down and CaribSea Brand come from the exact same place. They are mined by the exact same equipment run by the exact same people.

Note. Southdown is closer to Oolithic sand.

I have used both and I cant say I like them very much. Any disturbance in the tank and the dust is all voer everything

I have a 6" Southdown bed in my tank and love it. When the sand bed was new it stirred up easily, but now that it's full of life and settled in, I have no problems at all.

The benefits of a DSB like this far out way a little sand getting stirred up once in awhile. This particular reef tank of mine is full of corals, has a large V. Lion, large sergeant major, large snowflake, and a three-lined damsel. No skimmer, just a 30gal refugium and Nitrates are undetectable.

Thats a ripoff.

30lbs of Live Sand from Jeff's Exotic Fish is $35.00
www.exoticfish.com

That is expensive too. But better than $40 for 20lbs.
Southdown is hard to find here in Los Angeles

BlueWater,
Southdown is easy to find in So Cal if you know where to look. I can get it for 15.00 for a 50 pound bag....let me know if you need some.

I know its cheaper back east but for 15.00 you can't beat it out here.

Id say wait till I move the stuff and it settles to add any more frags but the 2 that I got from you are looking great.

Im basically setting up the 60 for about 75 bucks. I have some pumps, buying a new one, have 99% of the plumbing and im selling my HQI pendant and buying either a dual MH setup 250 or 400 or the 4x110 watt VHO. One or the other.

Thats why she let me bring it back. It wasnt costing much
GOtta get that southdown sand ....keep my wallet tight.
J

ps. I sent ya a pm just a sec ago

Southdown sand by itself is horrible. Iv had it in my 30 gal for over a year now and the dust/silt is everywhere. I am in the process of adding some larger particle sized caribsea sand. Just a half inch or so to keep the dust down.
