The only really good way I've found to control unwanted algae is to introduce a desirable algae and let it out-compete the undesirable stuff.

I have a SERIOUS problem with hair algae. I had a problem with it back in January and it died off with no real explaination (other than new tank syndrome), but it came back when I upgraded my lights in March. It's getting worse and worse--almost every rock is covered with it. I've performed only one major water change in the past 2 months and I have a phosphate/silicate filter installed. My sump is completely bio-ball free. My nitrates are <1, but that may be a false reading. The tank has no fish, and I feed the crabs/shrimp a small piece of shrimp (they share the one piece) once a week. So I'm at a loss as to where my nutrients for the algae are coming from. I haven't been feeding any of the corals for a month now--something that I hope won't last too much longer. The skimmer seems to be performing well, but it hasn't pulled much out of the water since I let the tank go fallow. (Which is expected.)

I'm going to build a refugium towards this end. I like SPASSE's design, and I think I'm going to borrow it.
