Smile Status on my 220g

Well it has been cooking now for almost a month and a half now...I did the transfer of the 90g to the 220g the other nite here are some pics of the tank.

Here is how it looked for the past 1.5 months

Now here is what it looks like after I have added the DIY LR that i made....a bunch of snails (Turbos, Astreas, Ceriths, & Nassar.) a few crabs, 2 Cleaner shrimps (thank god, the fish had ich) 5 bartlett anthias (these fish are stunningly beautiful) a Lawnmower blenny ( as you can see on my spraybar in the above pics I had a horrendous outbreak of hair algae, which now its almost all gone ) and of course all my other fish from my 90g Gold/maroon Clown, Yellow tang, Hippo tang, and yellow watchman gobie. Everyone is doing ok....the pics still show the corals a tad bit stressed from the move but they are looking better and I think i havent lost a one specimen

Some of you may recall my HQI and heat probs...as you can see i installed fans to suck the heat exhaust to the attic...and put my canopy on pulleys....well im sure this will be it on the pics and the board for a month or so.....Im swamped in work now....just wanted everyone to see the status

Thumbs up

Very nice!! You have built yourself a beautiful set up. It's great to see progress come from earnest effort.
Did you use the GARF method to make your LR?

I am impressed!!! I also have a 220 gallon and I wish I had set my tank up differently like yours. I like the way you layered the rock. I used red lava rock as a base and then laid the live rock on top. It was cheaper and lighter.

I did see a very cool tank in Connecticut, a 150 gallon in size. The guy nylon wire tied live rock to his PVC pip on one side to give a cave like effect. It gave it a real look. My tank looks like the bottom of a rock pile. Whenever I move, I plan to set it up differently.

Scuba, looking good.

You know, I am having less of a heat problem with my HQI's than I did with the Iwasaki's. I love mine. No fans, tank temp rises to 80.2 from 77.5 with all the lights going all day.

Thanx everyone....Couldnt have done it w/out RL!

Cod:

Yes i did learn most of what I know about my making of DIY LR from GARF. This is the key element IMO to making a great tank ( I wish I would have spent more time on it ) Cuz if you wanted you could make one huge rock and that would be it for your tank! Then evolve your whole Current/Light/Coral/Fish inhabitants around that one piece of rock....I Do have a section on my webpage devoted to making your own LR if you are interested I found that make pieces then concreting them together to form oddball shapes works great

Paul:

Man thats GREAT, Actually mine is peaking at 83 (which is no biggie) However the room is alot cooler since i put those vents in the hood and routed them into the attic! I dont know if i told you but I put a little window AC unit in the window of this room, but now that I have the vents to attic I dont think i need it, I do think im still gonna get a chiller....we are cold down here right now but summer is gonna be a smoker! The main problem with the room that my tank is in is that it is a small room and the tank eats up the majority of the room as well as the room being the farthest away from the Central ac unit

Organic:

Thanx bro!!
Both SS's on pretty much in the middle of the panels of the sides of the tank one is off set a tad more toward the back of the tank the other is offset a tad more toward the front of the tank. Yes the flat rocks are all DIY there is a section on my website that explains how to do the DIY LR. Feel free to email me or ask me any questions though

WOW! Very Nice!

scubadude:

Great job on the setup. I remember buying my first 10 gallon tank and having it set up in 2 hours. You've put in a tremendous amount of work into it, and it shows.

Lots of room for new corals. Good thing you're busy at work, cause you'll need the money for new animals.

Thanx Zoo and Rein

Naser:

Unscrew the bottom first holding the top in place with slip join pliers, once the bottom is unscrewed then take a towel and put around the threads on the bottom then slip joint pliers over the towel and keep the bottom from turning while you break loose the top part with top part with another pair of slip joint pliers....The top part is teflon taped and siliconed so clean it off and redo w/teflon tape and silicone afterwards, just make sure you dont turn the actual center pipe which rotates with the motor as it is indexed. Ed at Sea Swirl can walk you through it if you need help this is how I did my 1" SS's im not sure if its the same method applied to the 3/4 or 1/2....I Have a 1/2" SS that was on my 90 but i never modified it. You can make modifications to bottom or top as needed also remember my bottom coupler slides on to the SS and the other end of the coupler is a screwed in elbow DONT superglue or silicone the coupler to the SS....my 1/2" SS the stock elbow sometimes slides off once every 2-3 mos (no biggie just slide it back on) but with these couplers i made sure that they sinked on to the collar the full length.

Looks great scuba, just one Q

The egg crate, will it be removed?

"Egg crate under a sand layer will largely defeat the purpose of a sand bed in the area as it will effectively stop lateral movement and migration through the sediment."
...........Dr. Ron Shimek on this subject
