Clam Feeding

Who feeds their clams, and what?

I just got a nice 6-8" Deresa and a 2" maxima for my tank. Tank is about 8 months old with good halide lighting.

Never had a clam feed direct. I just make sure that I put DT's In every so often. Some say it helps, some say they don't know if it helps. But mine are growing like crazy.

I called the place I got them from and they feed DT's. They even said that the big deresa I got will almost take it as you are feeding it to the tank. They said to squirt some over it and it will begin to suck some in.

I dont think it will hurt to feed dt's 1x a week.

Paul just watch yer skimmer....if you can turn it off for a 10-15 min. during feeding DTs might be a good idea i know my skimmer seemed to want to go nuts when i feed DT's.

Here's few words from Daniel Knop's book

"Only the smallest particles present in the plankton, the so-called nanoplankton, is accepted as food. Not only the size of the particles but their concentration in seawater is also important and concentrations too high will provoke the same reaction as already described for particles too big. This is why it is NOT possible to feed clams with a pipette. The whole metabolic mechanism of the clams is not designed to cope with large amounts of food"

I have a derasa, 2 croceas, and a squamosa. I do not feed them directly. The derasa has grown from about 3" to the size of a football since 3/99.
