Question WOW! Huge nitrate/nitrite spikes......

Well, just did my daily tests and my nitrate went from 10 to 80 and my nitrite went from 2 to 8.4. Ammonia levels have been steady at 4.0 for the last few days. This is a good and means the tank is cycling right? Thanks for answering all my questions, this is my first experience with a reef tank and i have an endless ammount of questions and books can only tell you so much

Thanks

Andy

BTL,
Could you provide us a little more detail regarding your system? Is it the 3 gallon you mentioned in another post? Anyway, details such as how long it's been setup, type and amount of sand, LR, type of filtration, etc. It sounds like your tank is cycling though. Do you have "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Fenner? It's one of the best beginners books IMO.

yeah, all my posts are about the same tank. There is 1.5 pound of live rock and about 2 pounds of live sand. The filter is a standard penguine filter with filter floss, carbon, and a "Bio wheel". It has been set up for about 4 days now. Live rock is fiji islands and the people at the LFS said it came from ward(or walt, i cant remember) smith. Temperature is a steady 76 degrees and the salinity is about 1.023, Ph is at 8.0. Oh, and as far as the fungus goes, will it just slowy go away as the rock becomes more established or should i activly try to get rid of it. I would prefer to not disturb the rock but if i must i will do it, i want to have as little interaction as possible with the tank while it is cycling (probally becasue i dont want to screw anything up! Thanks

Andy
