Question Sponges

My LFS got in a bunch of bright orange sponges, all on rock, all tree shaped, some small some large. At $18.00 each it was tempting, but I wanted to know if anyone has any idea about these, and if they will survive in my 110 with 2-400watt Sunburst 12,000k metal halides, 2-160watt actinic flouescents, and 4-MaxiJet power heads. The search function doesn't seem to work, that's why I'm posting this.

Jim,
Is this Caribbean/gulf?
Do a search for Amphimedon compressa.
See if that looks like it.

Jim, does it look like this? -->

In general, sponges should never be taken out of the water. Air will be trapped in their water channelsa and will result in lack of feeding currents. There is no way for them to get rid of air. This will lead to the the sponge's death.

Sponges need to feed, they absorb dissolved organic material in the water but also need bacteria or nanoplankton. In closed systems, they compete with other bacteriovores like tunicates, clams, and SPS.

They are masters of chemical warfare. They shouldn't be put near other corals as they will be fighting (chemically) for space. Most sponges like strong current, low light intensity (but others do like bright light).

Cool

Gia that's what they look like. I'm not fond of chemical warfare...think I will pass on this one.
