Keeping Rock/Sand alive for a year??

I'm going to be moving in the next couple weeks, one of my tanks a 180 (fish only) I wont be able to set back up until I move to my permnament place which will be 9 months to a year. I would like to keep the 100lbs of rock and about 4 in of sand to use on my new tank but I would like to keep it alive, what would be the best way? i wont be able to have the tank so I was thinking to get a couple trash cans puting the rock in one with water, heater and PH and the same with the other. One the thing is the other 1 or 2 trash cans with the sand will be like 1-2 ft deep of sand im thinking any problems with this and the other I dont think I will be able to supply light for them for the whole (most) of the time. Will this work or will I have just a bunch of dead sand and rock?

Any suggestions would be great!

It'll stay kind of alive. I did that with a Rubbermaid container though.

I'd maybe think about one of those LONG rubbermaid containers, that way, you might could spread the sand out and keep the depth minimal, you also might be able to put your LR in there too and eliminate one of the containers. But as long as you feed it and give it a little light, it should be OK, but I wouldn't just jump right back into a tank with it, set it back up and let it culture with lights on it for a bit in the tank before you start with anything expensive.

I did it for three to four month stretches in my container, and the rock stayed purple.

Thumbs up

I agree with Biomanjcs72. Is there any way you could provide the LR/LS with some light by using the lights that were on the 180? I would try to use a skimmer too. I just moved my 72 reef from Tulsa,Ok to Chicago,IL. 2 weeks ago. So I know how you are feeling.
