Lightbulb My first Cyano outbreak.

My tank has started to get Cyano. Right now it has only covered a small patch of my substrate. What is the best way from preventing a full breakout? I should know this but up until now I have never had this happen.
Thanks,
SHOG

Well, FWIW, I've had my fair share of cyano outbreaks and I've always found that decreasing the amount of time your light(s) are on helps quite a bit. How long is your photo period currently? Anyway, all our "outbreaks" have eventually decreased and disappeared after a week or two. Oh yeah, what kind of "clean-up crew" do you have?

I had a bad outbreak of cyano. Of the many recommended solutions I chose what seemed to be the least toxic: I turned the lights off for 2 full days and covered the tank with a sheet to prevent any light from getting in. When I turned the lights back on the cyano was almost completely gone. What was left slowly diminished over 7-10 days.

HTH.

Yeah, more flow, cut down on feedings, lighting, pour some chlorine in the tank .....OH! NOT THAT! I got to tell you guys about the pouring of the chlorine someday....

Just do one or all of the above and it will go away. Its no big deal. what kind of skimmer dude?

Aragorn,
I my light schedule is 12 on and 12 off. As far as my clean up crew goes it seems that the mantis shrimp (you guys might remeber past posts on mantis shrimp for me) has had a feast on my snail and hermit crabs. Have you gottn any good deals on clean up crews on the net?

Strangelove,
Thanks for the input.

golfish,
I think I have been overfeeding since 2 fish died when I moved the tank from Tulsa,Ok to Chicago 2 weeks ago. I use a Aqua-C Remora Pro HOT skimmer. Man was it working over time the first few days after the move.

Thanks yall,
SHOG

I just physically moved my cuke to a cyano patch. He seems to be eating it up. We shall see. I figure I will give everyone a lite meal
and leave the lights off for most of the day tomorrow. Wish me luck!
