My 105g has been setup for 11 months. On 4/21/01 I purchased a Blue Linckia. Everything's cool until this past weekend. He looks like he's rotting away! Yesterday he had 4 legs, now he's down to 2
![]() I haven't added anything new for a couple of months, and with my chiller the temp stays between 76-78 degrees. I've searched for other posts on the Blue Linckia, and found a few that spoke about rotting. I'm just worried that someone else is eating him - like a snowflake eel maybe? And that it will eat everything else! I have a Red Fromia/Orange Knobby Star that I added on 10/16/01, a Red Banded Star added the same day, and a Hawaiian Black Brittle Star that don't seem to be having a problem. Can the Blue Linckia acuse the tank to crash?

If I read your post correct your tank was 4 months old when you added the Linckia, correct? My thought is that it never really had a chance. IME, they need a mature tank with lots of film algea. If they have to compete or there is not enough in the tank they will slowly starve. In My Experience they will handle other changes like temp and SG very well and MINE have not been effected by SG changes that went down to as low as 1.012 for over 30 minutes and temp swings of more then 5 degrees. I'm sure there will be people who disagree but these are my experiences not something I read.
I don't think your star will cause a crash but you might as well remove it and give it a quick ending.... Mark |

Hmmmmmmm.....
Thanks for the reply golfish. I've heard the deal about putting them in a very mature tank quite a bit (of course, that was AFTER I bought it
).It's just odd that he was doing very well for 7 months, then bammo! I'm going to try and remove him for his own good. Another tragic ending.

You probably didn't notice. They start to get thinner and thinner and then they start to rot away from the tips of the arms. It takes some time and you probaly HAD enough food to keep it going for awhile. I don't know much about the other starfish you have but I bet they didn't help.

I completely agree with golfish's assessment.
They are strickly a established tank creature, that often need more room (read Food) than a typical tank mid-size tank like yours can provide
