Wow! I don't really want to add it all up, although I've wasted so much $$$, that's what's really depressing.
I've started a scrap book of my tanks and fish (something to leave on the coffee table for guests to thumb through) and I decided to have an obituary page at the end. Well, last night I organized the list of fish and came up with a whopping 39 fish I've lost over the past 3 years. The range of cost has been from free to cheap (damsels) all the way to $80 for my first powder blue tang. OK, now I'm not only depressed about the amount of money I've wasted, but about all the lives I've wasted too. My 180: tank $375, stand/hood $365, sand $45 (got a great deal), live rock $250 (got an even greater deal), pump, sump tank, lights, accessories etc. $600. Actually I'm quite pleased with the low cost of this set-up. ![]()

$1700 for a 110 and stand?
I was ripped on a tank like that once. That store got my money that day, but that's the last day they'll ever get it.

I got my tank and stand at a funky little place at the edge of a very yucky part of North Las Vegas. The place is called Tanks-A-Lot. The tanks have no brand names (all are glass) and come with a glass cover. There is no delivery and no gaurantee. It's cash only, or credit card. My 180 weighed as much as a piano, and 2 employees helped my son and me get it to his Ford Explorer. Then we took it to the glass place to get it drilled, where their employees wrestled it. The glass place then delivered it to our house. The cabinet came partially unassembled and completely unfinished. I bought it first and painted it and assembled it in the family room before we had the tank delivered. (I forgot to mention that the drilling was $65 and the delivery was $85, so add that to the price of the tank).
A couple of weeks ago I heard that Tanks-A-Lot had suffered a devistating fire. I haven't called them yet to see if they're still in business. I sure hope so.

Hey Omega_Rains,
Your going to have to get some pics of that set-up when you get it going. Sounds awesome .Going with the tank costs should I add in the central air that I put in to keep my system temp in check. Along with the new water well that I'll be putting in to keep my RO running. My well now doesn't keep up with me and the family competing for water ![]() |

Hmmmmm, askin' that question is a sore spot !
I setup a 125 reef last year and rock/sand/livestock was added from 29 and 55 gallon reefs. I have added a lot of livestock since then and stopped counting after I was over 5000. I just shove the receipts into a large folder now and someday will add it all up! My dream tank would be one over 500 gals but that would cost a small fortune judging from some of the costs on larger tanks posted here. |

Well I have found my next tank. From a manufacturer in Ohio. It is 8ft / 4 ft/ 3ft and cost 3500.00. I have my wife convinced that I NEED it!!!!!! It is 750 gallons. WIll build the house around it! A few extra 20 amp breakers here, an extra GFCI there, a few eyeball light to really frame it as the focal point of the room. 10,000 later it is stocked (LOL) and only cost a few hundred a month to maintain!!! What a deal huh. A few years down the road though.
