Well, FWIW, our LFS has had a 20g reef running w/ a small hang-on Ecosystem refugium for several months now. Seems to be thriving quite nicely. It seems to be a pretty cool little setup.
Just had a thought. Has anyone tried settin up a hang on the back refugium on a smaller tank using one of those hang on power filters? I would imagine it would work the same right? And just stick a small light over it? What do you think? Would it work?

i guess my question was more, can you use a hang on power filter like a whisper or penguin and put miracle mud in it? any reason why it wouldn't work?
Hmmm...not sure about that one my friend. Sorry I couldn't be of further help.

I have the largest CPR hang-on-the-back refugium and my main complaint is that it is too small.

what size is your tank?
I would think it would work , I mean have you ever seen all the life that grows in an old power filter? Pods, worms, APTASIA
I added a 12' aquafuge to the side of my 95 fowlr just for the fun of it a month or so ago and it's fun to see it start to mature .
I had it on the back of my 29 reef but didn't like the set up . I also modified it to a Mj 1000 so I could hide the pump behind the rocks. I run a LOA on it. Got some xenia and BRILLO algae growing in it.
I have a hang-on refugium by EcoSystem running on my 46 gal. I'm having good results so far. The miracle mud inside a power filter would probably be fine as long as there isn't any oxygen bubbles in the section of the filter you want to put it in. The idea is to have an anaerobic/anoxic area for the bacteria to colonize in the mud. I think if the area is full of oxygen bubbles that would probably defeat the purpose. Other than that, as long as there is enough water flow but not so much that the mud gets swept into the tank, you should be fine to put some in there. Interesting idea!![]()
