Question Southdown Sand on the way!!!

I just ordered 3 bags of southdown from Reefland and I cannot wait for it to get here!

Does anyone know where I can get some good Live Sand to seed it with? I plan on adding a IPSF kit but also need the LS bacteria. The LFS here has what they call live sand but it looks like sand in a tank to me, not very alive. Who has the best LS online?? Also how much should I order?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan ~

Do you have live rock that will be going into this tank with the sand?

Anyway, if you are going to order the detrivore kit from IPSF, that will take care of your sand bed just fine. In the meantime, you do not need any sand bed bacteria. Even if you didn't have live rock, the bacteria would show up all by themselves in time. If you want to speed the sand bed process up you can buy just a small amount of live sand from the LFS.

I have about 60 lbs of LR in the tank now. The tank has been set up about 2 months now and has a crushed coral substrate. I plan on putting the LR in a large cooler with the tank water and inverts. The Kole and Yellow tangs are going in a 10 g aquarium. It was a hospital tank and has been treated with copper in the past. When the tank begins to clear up I will "rebuild" the future reef and return the fish.

BTW the 10g has had a biowheel filter running on it for 2 weeks and 2 medium sized pieces of LR in it also. I think it will be able to support the fish for a couple of days with no problem. I also completely drained and refilled it after I had finished with the copper treatments but the LR was in it for the treatments. So none of the shrimps, crabs, snails can go in it.

Should I rinse the southdown or just add it? I have a Fluval 304 that I can use for Mech. filtration.

It is better to NOT rinse the Southdown sand. You would be rinsing away all the silt that you want to keep. The tank will cloud up for a few days but it will settle down and clear up soon enough.

Good luck,

Ok, one more question and I will quit bothering you (for tonight at least). What should I order from IPSF. I was just at their website and I am now confused as to what I need. It all looked sooooo good. What do you have and what do you reccomend?

Thanks for all the help,
Ryan
