I'm wondering what kind of filter (if any) do I need for my Nikon Coolpix 995 to take close-up macro shots of corals? Is a tripod needed and which settings do you usually use? Thanks in advance!

I can't speak for that camera specifically, but a tripod is a must-have for everyone taking pictures of their reefs. The quality of pics I take is directly related to whether or not the camera is mounted to a tripod, or help in my shaky grip

A filter is generally not needed. The tripod is essential, as the CoolPix cameras have somewhat slow shutter speeds.
