How is your tank doing without the sand?

there is no easy way to do this, simply take handfuls of CLEANED sand and add away--it might help if you turn of the powerheads but, not much.

I just did this 2 weeks ago, I added 2 bags of southdown sand. I used a piece of 4 inch PVC and poured the sand in this tube to the bottom. Slowly moving the PVC to eliminate a mess. I did it at night when the lights went out, by morning it was crystal clear. I did it as I am having problems with higher than normal nitrates, I only had a coating on the bottom.
Hope this helps good luck!

no problem, just add it slowly say an inch at a time, and give it a week in between additions.this will allow the fauna to move up before they are buried so deep they die.if youre worried about clouding, turn off all circulation ,get the sand wet(preferebly with aquarium water),and lower it in a large cup to the bottom of the aquarium ,and then dump it out.ive used this method several times ,and i never have a problem with excessive clouding .hth

I have added sand by filling a Zip-Loc bag with washed sand, then lowering the bag to the sand bed and opening the zipper. You can dump the sand into place without clouding or a sand storm. I agree with turning off the power heads when you do this.

Once again thanks for all the input... to answer Bongobrian... I really have no problems other than low PH (7.8 steady), low Alk (3.0 mequ/l) and high Ca (STEADY constant 550 pph). I changed to Restore System (Part 1 and 2, although I am barely using part 2), and the readings stay the same. I have been mersing with it now for two weeks and i can barely get the Alk up (I was told that I wanted it at around 4.0 and the Ca at 450-500.)
The tank is right at 10 months old, and I have been syphoning when changing water, so the level or aragonite has dropeed... so I was reading about sand on the tank and was thinking about at least having a layer across the front of the tank.
