Snails On Their Backs
Can someone tell me how a snail species that can't turn itself upright ever survived the Darwin "Survival of the Fittest" test for millions of years?
I spend way too much time turning these stupid snail over. I think they fall over just to get attention. Which snails can re-right themselves? |

The only time I have problems with my snails is when Im cleaning my glass and knock them off then I have to turn them over. I have 4 different kind of snails. Maybe you need to start a work out regiment for your snails they are getting soft slow sounds to me.

I have seen ones dubbed "Mexican Turbo" and "Red Turbo" at my LFS that can actually flip themselves. One of the cooler things I've ever seen, the snail actually dives out of it's shell hard enough to roll over. I haven't bought any yet, but it is my plan to replace all of my kamakaze margarita snails with those others. I'm tired of moving a rock or something and finding a rotting snail that has gotten stuck, but nothing has found it and cleaned it up yet.

I've been trying to teach my micro-hermits to turn over their fallen snail comrades, but they'd rather eat them while they're helpless. Maybe a nurse shark?

Maybe you need a very small remote controlled robotic submarine so if you see one fall over, you can just scuttle over to it and pick it up without having to leave your couch. Not only would it be entertaining, but you'd keep your hands dry.

I have the same trouble. Every few days I'm flipping a snail back over. I have turbos and ceriths. The other day I picked up I trochus snail. To me it looks just like the turbos but this one has like vertical stripes on the shell. The LFS said this snail will right itself. I have never seen it on it's back yet. Is this a Trochus and are they self flippers?
I think a lot has to do with the sand. It seems like they can't get anything to grip on to pull themself back up. |
