I'll tell you what I did and try to answer a couple of your concerns.
My tang, too, had a problem with Ich. I took a 20L and filled it completely with water from my 75. I also put in a powerhead, a heater, and a powered filter. I didn't let it age or anything, I just put the tang in as soon as the water was transferred and the water was dosed with copper. On hindsight I probably should have let the fish acclimate a little, since there was copper in the water. The light strip on the Q-tank is on the same timer as the main tank. I also added a 'sacrificial' live rock. The live rock will never return to the main tank. The live rock is my bacteria reservoir. I monitored my water parameters closely for the first week and they stayed pretty good. All in all, I figure the tang will be in the Q-tank for 6 weeks. (4 more weeks to go) If your tang is looking pretty bad, you may want to consider soaking his food in Myacin or some similar antibiotic--to prevent a secondary infection. Be careful with the biological filter, the anti-biotic will kill it. Good luck, ------------------ -Todd 'There're only 3 types of people in the world: Those who can count and those who can't' |

I need to set up a quarantine tank for my ich-y yellow tang. I have an empty 29g, but I'm not sure how to set it up for immediate use. I know to use water from a water change on my 55g, but the most I could get from that is about 10 gallons.
Should I just have 10 gallons in the 29g? Or should I make up the rest with freshly-mixed water? What should I use for filtration? Do I need anything? I have a dry biowheel, but it seems that wouldn't do me any good until it gets a bacteria colony growing on it. Anyone know how long that takes? Lastly, how long should I treat my tang with either copper or hyposalinity? And how low is "hypo?" |
