using canister as biological filter??
i have an old Eheim 2213 canister filter and was wondering if i could use this as a biological filter for my 75 gal tank. i've read that as a mechanical filter, this could cause more of a problem in reef, in that waste accumulated turns toxic.
what if i don't use foam filter in it but only ceramic tubes or bio-balls. i'm new in reef, just starting from FOWLR so i don't have a sump yet. thanks for the advise jun |

I used an Eheim for biological filtration initially, thinking that as long as I paid so much money for it, I would use it dammit!
I continually had low levels of nitrates, which were eliminated when I converted to a DSB. You don't need the canister at all. I use a Magnum canister now to run carbon only. |

I bought an eheim 2227 and I have an aqua medic protein skimmer. I have a small 15 gallon tank. Should I convert the tank into a sump??

Hi energyguy, Welcome to Reefland!
I would not use the Eheim, if possible take it back and get a refund. The use of these types of mechanical filters is not required and can lead to problems if they are not actively maintenanced. If you do not have a sump, then yes I would try to incorporate a sump on any marine system for the added water volume and a place for equipment. This provides you with a nice place for your protein skimmer, heaters, any probes that may be used and provides extra circulation with the return pump. What kind of tank do you have? Scott Z. |

This forum has tons of information on setting up a sump and what is required to do so. I'll post some threads here that you can sift through and if you have any specific questions, feel free to post a new thread.
