Arrow Dumb LFS Advice....

OK, I got this idea from a thread on another board. What are some of the dumbest things you have heard LFS employees tell customers?

Here are a few of the dumbest things I have overheard:
  • The reason we don't carry metal halides is because metal halides will burn your corals.
  • The size of your tank doesn't matter because none of our fish will get bigger than about 4" in your tank... (if they live that long).
  • You won't have a problem putting two Yellow Tangs in your 55-gal tank provided you add them at the same time.
  • The only reason we have that 1/2" deep sand bed in our display reef tank is to make it look natural. Anything deeper than that will cause problems with hydrogen sulfide.
  • If your tank was set up three weeks ago and none of the damsels have died in the past two weeks, then your tank is OK to go with the Flame Angels we talked about last time. How many would you like, they're only $42 each, we recommend two.
  • We recommend Cleaner Wrasses to get rid of ich. Yes, they will probably die in a few weeks but they're cheap, you can buy some more the next time you get ich.
  • Yes, these are Sebae Clowns. We get them to go with our Sebae Anemones.
  • Come back.

I shouldn't do this because the guy who said it lurks on this board, but...

"Hey, if you're getting below 30 nitrates on your reef tank you're doing good."

and from the other place here in town, (in response to why all of the LFS's live rock has a shiny green-brown color):

"The copper medication we use to disinfect our system causes that. How much rock would you like to get?"

1) "I wouldn't recommend adding more than 3 fish at a time." (To my newly established 55 gallon FO tank.)

2) "I don't think the Clown Trigger will cause any trouble with the Sohal Tang or Emperor Angel. It might bother the other 15 smaller fish." (Again in the 55 gallon tank.)

"Thats a Flame Clam! It is very easy to take care of...just drop it in the tank anywhere."

"This is a great looking Longhorn Cowfish. ... NAW... it doesnt get any bigger than that! (Looking at a 1 1/2 inch long COwfish!)"

On my last visit, I gave them an illustrated fish catalog..I forgot the name!

Great thread.

"I wouldn't put liverock in your tank--it will disintegrate without PC lighting. Let me show you our PC setups over here..."

Honest to God...

"Put this Derasa (actually a Crocea) clam in the sand bed in the same area as your anemone (actually a Flower Pot coral.) Make sure and feed him pieces of meaty foods twice a week."

Just stir the salt up real good in the water then you will be fine adding these 2 grey angel fish.

(heard this last week to be exact, just walked away.)

"How about this nice Mandarin GOBY to eat up that algae?"

He looked at me with two heads when I told him my 55 was not nearly mature enough, nor large enough to support the live food needs of a Mandarin Dragonet, which is not even a goby.

OR when he tried to tell me that the BTA that was moving through an eggcrate divider, was actually dividing himself through 6 of the little holes, and putting himself back together on the other side. He wouldn't believe me when I insisted that the anem was pushing ALL its tissue through one little square hole......

This individual is not in the business anymore, thank God for small mercies.

I'm in the business myself, but at least I have a clue *g*.

Hey scuba - just thought I'd mention those tap water purifiers actually do a pretty good job. Although you're right - they're not a full ro/di unit. They're just a DI cartridge.

Unfortunately my tap water has TONS of chloramines in it which exhaust those things pretty rapidly. But they are effective at pulling out a lot of contaminents.....

Actually this can work out pretty kewl....If you get someone thats so stupid that they dont know what half the stuff is in there then you can get some pretty good deals sometimes....Not that I have ever done that

Raven:

I thought those where DI's (wasnt 100% though) I would love to use one in conjuction to my RO unit but wasnt to sure if that would affect my pressure output, as my RO unit is only a 15gpd have you heard anything adding these on to an Existing RO unit?

Talking this one takes the cake

You can put that parrotfish in your reef tank, they aren't interested in corals at all
