Flow through a refugium
I was just wondering what kind of water flow everyone here has going through their refugiums.

Refugiums are designed as a refuge for micro fauna to proliferate and in a sense feed the display; therefore, a circular loop is implied, in from the display/sump and out to either.

I run one UL rio 180 from the sump of my system to my 5 gallon refugium. Its a low flow, I wouldnt want all that getting stirred up. Works great for me. Id go the lowest flow that still keeps the water circulating nicely.

SupaJSK,
The flow rate through the refugium is very much dependent on the physical layout and size of the refugium itself. My last 180-gallon system used a MAG 1200 return pump, which with plumbing losses, worked out to about 1000 gallons per hour, or about 5.5 X. Because of the baffles and relative size of the sump/refugium this water flow rate was just fine. You can see that the macro alga was very happy. I have CAD drawings and pictures of this setup on my WEB site. Regards, Scott Passe
