Leather. need advice
I picked up a crown leather a week ago and yesterday it closed/shrunk up. It looked great all week. Everything else looks great.
Did all my water tests and everthing is OK. Only thing different is I fired up my CR Thursday. This morning I moved it closer to the light and put it in a little more current to see what happens- nothing yet. What am I missing? Any thoughts? Thanks, Bill |

Nothing wrong with your leather. It is reacting to a ph drop from firing up your calcium reactor. My leathers do it all the time as I run a calcium reactor for 3 months and drip kalkwasser for the next three. (swithcing off every 3 months).
It should bounce back in a few days. Vic |

I have found that the sps corals grow quicker this way. I don't know why it happens chemicly, but it keeps the turf algae in check. I find that the turf algae will grow quickly when the calcium reactor is on for 4-6 months steadily. If I give it a break, the rise in the ph from dripping kaukwasser limits and even gets rid of the turf algae and the corals grow! I've done this for about 2 years now. Try it , it works well.

OK, I'll give it a few more days. Didn't think my PH dropped that much but I had a feeling the CR caused something to happen. Will try the 3 month on and off schedule- thanks for that.
I just moved it a few inches higher and I have a Seaswirl pushing water back and forth over it. When I picked it out at the LFS it was high in the tank with a powerhead over the top of it and I tried to match that in my tank. I'm thinking of only running the CR during the day maybe this will work out also. The wife has to work Christmas Day so we're having our Christmas today so Merry Christmas All and thanks for the help. Bill |

Placing the leather in strong current is probably a good idea.. most leathers love current. I just wanted to say, make sure your iodine levels are good. IME leathers are very sensitive to infections and without the proper levels of iodine, they will get infected and die.

Just an update to let everyone know my leather has finally opened back up.
I lowered it about 3", redirected my Seaswirls, and removed a large hermit that seemed to be bothering the corals. Two days ago the leather started to look alive and today it looks great. Don't know if the above actions did it or maybe it would have come around anyways. Thanks again, Bill |
