Southdown Sand in Dallas/Ft. Worth
Hey guys,
A guy over at reef central has had success in ordering pallets of Southdown Sand from his local Home Depot. He's ordered a couple of pallets in the past and has gotten some interest in ordering another pallet. Here's the thread - warning, it's kinda long: http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin...564#post357196 If you're interested, let him know. I have a personal interest, as I'd like to get 7 bags for my new tank! ![]() (thanks Ninong for turning me on to that thread in the first place). -Mike

It has the right grain size that your looking for in a DSB and it's cheaper than what you by at the LFS and it's the same thing.

It's the exact same sand from the same place some of the Carrib Sea Sand products come from. If you can find it at Home Depot (not available in all of 'em nation wide) it's usually ~$5/ 50 pound bag. Carrib Sea is usually ~$20 for a 20 to 30 pound bag.
As mentioned above, its also perfect for making a deep sand bed with. Perfect blend of particle sizes. -Mike

I assume that since you can get it at Home Depot than it is NOT live sand and you guys mix it with live sand. Or do you just put it in the tank with live rock and let it become live?

Nope it's "dead" sand but of course you can seed it with a pound or 2 of live sand. It will all become live over time.
I also sometimes ask my lfs to siphon some grunge from the bottom of their live rock curing tank and put that in my tank. All kinds of fauna are in it that seed the sand bed. South Down is one of the best ways to save money while properly setting up a reef. -Mike

By the way, Marty has decided to go ahead and order the pallet. It should be here in a couple of weeks for those who are interested. Let Marty know if you want some.
