I have a Nikon 990 and the default macro setting on the camera is so good that I can shoot a full frame image of a 1/4" sqare object. It gets so close you can hardly get light between the object and the lens. I can't imagine needing a macro any tighter than that.

Kenko makes a macro lens for the 900 series Nikons. Check out www.bhphoto.com.

I also have the 995 and as Reinhold said, I can't imagine why you'd need one. I'd wait until you get your camera before spending the cash!
I'd need to climb in the tank to shoot any closer !Mike |

Take it from an ex pro photog - You absolutely, positively do not need a macro lens for a Nikon 995. If you actually do - you don't need a macro lens you need a microscope.....

Ravenmore and others I would side with. The 995 takes such large pictures and combined with a macro you literally have a microscope on your hands - literally.
You can stick the lens as close as a 2cm and given the resolution of the image it can be 2-3 times the size of your screen depending on your screen rez. You can crop down to what you want as your subject if you need to and still have a great image. If anything I would also wait and see how you like the stock macro capability and is hands down the best of the prosumer digicams. Take a look at some of the macros from my web page and I'm using an older 2.1 megapixel 950. I haven't bought any attachments/lenses for it both for lack of funds and for the great results I've had already.

Scubadude,
You may want to consider some filters that you can play with as they can be much cheaper than lenses. As for the UW housing you should maybe try to contact James Wiseman from reefs.org. He's had a recent dive out to Belize with a 995. He has some awefully nice shots: http://www.reefs.org/ubb/ultimatebb....c&f=1&t=033240

I have some macro lenses, I rarely use it, unless I want a bit more detail in something, but I want to have a bit more area to take a picture, I go ahead and use it.
here is my set 28MM - 37MM Step Up ring. Tiffen closeup lenses, UV, and Polarizer, it works nicely - but needs to really fiddle with the lenses to get a lot less reflection taking pictures thru the tank. the UR-E4 is a Ring for my Nikon 885, I also have a 995 here too, I m lately leaning towards to the 885, but I do wish it was quicker at times. (reason for liking 885 is nice formfactor, easy to put in pocket and better resolutions and barrel disortion is less than a 775) |

I just ordered a set of tiffen macro lenses (the +1, +2, & +4) plus the step up ring for $49.35 including FedEx saver shipping from B&H.
The lenses can be combined to make a total of +7 if needed. I thought about getting the +7 & +10 kit for another $34.95, but decided to wait for now. From my understanding the higher the magnification on these macro lenses the closer you need to be to the object so to use the +10 magnification you would need to be a couple inches from the object you wanted to take the picture of. I will enjoy expirementing with them and agreee - these ARE going to be used instead of a microscope! ;-) FWIW, Nathan |
