Hi All,
I have noticed a few people on this board talking about a product called Golden Pearls over at www.brineshrimpdirect.com Are these something that you have to hatch yourself? I read that people use these Rotifers to feed their sandbeds, but can they be used to feed the fish? I already use Kents Phytoplankton, Selecon, and Zoe Would I be over doing it if I got the Golden Pearls? Thanks, CaptK |

Capn, Golden Pearls are not hatchable. They are man-made food capsules that come in various sizes. Many people find that they are an excellent source of food for their tanks. The various sizes are available to cover a wide range of animals. Many corals find them delicious. Dr. Ron had an analysis done and this was one of the food items studied. It was found to be nutritious. A very tiny amount goes a long way.
I believe that BSD has more detailed information on their site that explains this product but I haven't personally read their site in some time. Ninong ------------------ Irrational Exuberance! |

I have been using the Golden Pearls for a couple of months now and they are great. Just make sure you don't use too much of it. I made that mistake and it caused a massive algae bloom. Now I just feed a small pinch once or twice a week. You can also use them to target feed some corals.

Thanks Guys,
A few more questions: I am pretty sure that I have read that someone on this board uses the Rotifer Size Golden Pearls 100-200 microns to feed their sandbed. But what sizes should/can be used to feed corals and also fish. How big is a micron? I think the last time I heard that term was back in High School Physics. And how much, or how big are the bags they come in? They have 2 & 8 oz. bags. Will a 2oz bag be enough for my 29G for a few months?? Thanks, CaptK [This message has been edited by CaptainK (edited 05-21-2001).] |

I just recieved mine last friday.
I ordered a 8 oz bag of 60-100,100-200 and 200-300. The 8 oz bag is more than you will ever use. Just a get like 2 of the 2 oz bags and that should last probably a year. I have only fed once so far and it was too much. I used a scoop(salifert calcium test kit scoop very small)from each bag. I will go with just a pinch of each next time feeding twice a week. I would go with 60-100 and 100-200. |

I use the "Artemia 1" 200-300 micron size for feeding my corals and the sandbed. 1 micron is 1/1000 of a millimeter(Extremely Small). I have never used the Golden Pearls to feed my fish. They have never shown much interest in it, however I have wondered about the use of them for feeding Bangaii Cardinal Fry.
As for package size, I would say the 2 ounce size would last you a long time. I ordered the 16 ounce package and I will be using it for years. I wonder if the stuff goes bad? Does anyone know if this stuff expires? Andrew ------------------ I'm living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart. e.e.cummings |

I use three different sizes of the perals in my tank. They work well and I like them. A 2oz bag should last a long long time. I feed 1/8th a teaspoon of each size I have whenever the mood strikes me. Not more than twice a week normally.
I have tried them on banggai cardinal fry and they are just not interested. Too bad too since it would be quite nice if that was all I needed to feed the fry. HTH, JP ------------------ http://fyrman.homestead.com/welcome.html |

So, if I were to get these Golden Pearls do you still think that I would need to use the Kents Phytoplankton? I was also considering getting DT's. But if I were to get all of this stuff wouldn't that be overkill??
Couldn't I just stick with one of them? Thanks, CaptK |

Not to intrude on your thread CaptainK but I have notice that most of you are saying that you feed this stuff about twice a week. Is that in addition to other feedings or do you ONLY feed your fish twice a week? I recently switched from feeding every 4 days to feeding daily at the suggestion of my LFS, shortly after I experienced a TERRIBLE slime algae problem and I am wondering if this could be the reason.

kholladay,
The feeding of the corals with pearls twice a week does not include feeding fish. I feed my fish 2 times a day. Frozen in the morning and flake in the evening. |

I also got 3 sizes of golden pearls a few months back. I have been using it atleast once a week, sometimes twice. I also just got the DT phytoplanton last week. I have a lot of corals that are said need to be spot fed, like sun corals. BTW, I just got a new black one last week. Hasn't opened much yet though.
Anyway I wanted to ask how everyone is storing the golden pearls. Since I have a lot and it will last along time. |
