I'm running an alk of 3-3.5 meq/l. I'm curious, too. I've heard some very broad ranges on what the number should be.

ok naser...
Im lost now. I thought that DKh and Alkalinity were the same..... I think that your 9 reading and 3.5 are just different measurement standards....But I may be wrong....and then you may shoot me ![]() lol. J

Yes those are both measuring the same thing... alkalinity or carbonate hardness. I believe meq/l is a standard commonly used in the United States for scientific purposes. DKH comes from the German scale. They can both be used to measure alkalinity.

naser- I meant to also tell you that according to your tests, your alkalinity is at a very good level right now. 3.54 meq/l is awesome if you can keep it there. I think the ideal range for a reef tank is 3.2-3.6 meq/l. I struggle keeping mine at the higher end of that range.

Mine runs 4.5-5.0 meq/L. I've had it up to 6.5 meq/L but this resulted in lower calcium readings.

I maintain a DKH of 10-12 with reef builder and kalk. Is pretty stable.

I drip kalk. and both the 120 and 180 sps tanks with about 8 clams run at 460ppm., and 11-12dKh. Steady as a rock.

I don't drip kalk (yet). I've always struggled with my alk and ph. right now it's back to 3.5 meq/l. My Seachem test kit says sea water is between 2-3 meq/l but aquariums should be between 4-6 meq/l.
