Connecticut Meeting - Aquarium Photography Workshop

New Year Greetings!

The Southern New England Reefers group will be meeting at Reef and Fin this coming Sunday January 13th. 2002 at 2PM.

Reef and Fin, Inc.
180 Bedford St.
Stamford, CT 06901
Tel: 203.325.3562
Fax: 203.325.3564

The focus of this month’s discussion will be on Photography and your tank. Yes, the art and technique of capturing professional images of your aquarium.

Connecticut’s own professional photographer and reefer will lead the discussion on the tricks and techniques of the trade; the “how tos” of shooting through a challenging medium (glass/acrylic/water). Some of the topics of discussion will address the proper use of lenses, filters, f-stops, shutter speed, shooting with canopy lighting and flash.

If you plan to attend kindly email to webmaster@SNEReefers.com

Thanks
Jerry

Sometimes I miss Connecticut.

Sounds like a nice workshop. Any chance notes will be taken and possibly shared with Reefers around the globe? Photography is always a good topic for hobbyist on the Net, since this is the only way we can visually share our passions with one another.

Have fun,
Scott Z.

Hi Scott,

New Year Greetings!

How did the August house closings go? I trust it went as planned, but from my personal experience it usually does not; especially if there is a bulldog attorney representing your opposition, for lack of a better word.

Which part of Connecticut were you from? Things have really changed around here. Very soon Stamford will have the largest stock-trading floor in the world, right smack by Stamford station. I suppose it is a project being spearheaded by Swiss bank. I could be wrong.

Not certain if it'll be a positive or negative move, but definitely the traffic is getting worst, compared to what it used to be 15-20 years ago. And, to think I got out of NYC for some peace and taste of the suburbs.

Photography does appear to be a large part of a reefers’ portfolio, and a most challenging one, into the bargain. The basic laws of point, focus and click do not always turn out the way we expect. I am sure many of us have encountered shots where everything in the darn room shows up in the image except the subjects in focus.

I was actually planning to videotape the workshop, how successful that’s going to turn out is another story.

You're most welcome to join us, as I'll need help with the cameras.

Jerry

Hi Jerry!

Actually, we closed on our planned date and were moved in our availble time frame amid several mis-understandings. The darn mortgage company set-up appointments with two separate closing attorneys, one whom had the title, the other whom had everything else. Needless to say it was difficult, and expensive, to get the two attorneys to share the information to get us closed.

I lived in Fairfield for a few years in the late 90's. I often traveled to the city down 95 and I can't imagine traffic being worse. It was an absolute nightmare then. It sure was beautiful country though.

Anyhow, be sure to share some of the pointers from the workshop.

Jersey, as we spoke, I gotta work saving the city and all of mankind on Sunday But I am curious. Who is our expert tank photographer?

If by chance I should get out early, (fat chance) then I'll come on down.

Hi Scott

When you have more than one attorney, you’re headed for trouble. Sometimes I wonder what goes through the loan officer’s head; $$$$..I suppose. As, for the attorney’s, I rather not know.

I recently had a closing delayed for over a month after approval, because the attorney and bank were not on the same page. According to the bank: You didn’t send me this and that, ya-da, ya-da. On top of that the bank renege on the agreement.

Another, unusual law in Connecticut is that the bank and the mortgagee can share an attorney. I was a little perturbed when I had that experience without being consulted, as you wonder whose interest takes priority.

In any event, it is good to know that you were able to resolve your predicament without having the wrench thrown into your desired “move-in” dates.

Will be happy to update you on the outcome of Sunday’s workshop.

Jerry

Hey JP,

Fancy meeting you here.

It is important to keep on saving lives, as after the 9/11 tragedy the prestige of fire fighters have risen to new heights. Now, you do realize that with added prestige, higher expectations are tagged onto your belt

But really, you need to take a break, and from seeing that you have recently acquired a pretty high tech camera, the workshop may prove very interesting for you. I know that it will be for me, as I got a fantastic camera for Christmas.

Michael does great work, I saw some pictures of his aquarium and some of his work at Reef and Fin. In fact, he was planning to be at our last meeting, but had to cancel as he was called off for a shoot in California.

Hope you can join us JP

Jerry

Cool what you get for a camera? I am just about mastering mine. Thanks for the kind words about my job, but it is my job.

I really doubt I'll be able to make it. Any idea where Feb's is going to be?

I got a Canon D30

Hope you can make it for the next session, tentatively planned for the last week in February/first week in March. I trust that there were no glaring emergencies on your shift.

Jerry

We actually had more laughs at the meet!

MGM’s aquarium photography tip # 101a

You got to get the flash up, above the tank and not in front of the tank; with a rubber lens hood resting on the glass pane (as diagram above). The idea is to protect the area of glass you’re shooting through from the room’s reflections. For those of you who have a camera without connecting screw threads on your lenses, you could tape the rubber hood onto your lenses with electrical tape.

That’s all I managed to transcribe, for the evening Scott very soon I’d have to get a secretary or else you’ll be getting yesterday’s news wonder if my wife will have a fit?

Goodnight for now.
Jerry
