Would Dried Phytoplankton help?

Hi Everyone,
I am debating if my tank would benefit from getting the Spray Dried Phytoplankton that is available now.
I have a variety of corals which includes softies, mushrooms, polyps, and LPS, to name a few.
I currently use the Golden Pearls 100-200 & 200-300 and add Selcon to my tank with the fish feedings. And the occassional piece of shrimp to the needed corals.
So would my tank benefit from the Spray Dried Phytoplankton or would it just be over kill?
Any recommendations as too which brand might be better than the other?

Thank,
CaptK

Hi CaptainK!

I have used ESV's for a few years now. The price is right and my soft corals always opened wide during feeding. Your current feedings are surely sufficient however your corals would probably enjoy the "mixed diet".

Captain K, I second Reefland's comments my corals all seemed to take off after I started using ESV's phytoplankton.

Should have asked this above,
but is this type of phytoplankton the same stuff as the Golden Pearls or is it composed of different stuff?

Thanks Again,
CaptK

Golden Pearls is not the same stuff as ESV's Spray-Dried Marine Phytoplankton. Golden Pearls is good stuff, it's just not phytoplankton. You should use both Golden Pearls and live phytoplankton. You can either culture your own life phytoplankton or you could buy some.

However, IMO you would be much better off using DT's Live Phytoplankton instead of the SDMP stuff. Dr. Rob Toonen has a very interesting product comparison of commonly available plantonic foods for feeding reef aquaria in the Marine Fish & Reef 2002 Annual. DT's rated highest and ESV's SDMP rated lowest.

I used to use Dt's but they only have 1 type of phytoplankton..

Theres iso, nanno, and..shoot..one more cryopsis....in phytoplankton and dt's only has one.

I use liquidlife now as it contains all 3. Ill post more when I see real results...ive used it only for a few days as the DT's in my LFS was expired..ugh.

Seems they both are dead phyto and since liquidlife has 3 types , the more the merrier
