bubble coral prolbem
Hi,
I have had my bubble coral for about 8 months and it has always done well. I have had it in a 55-gallon tank about 6 inches from the top and with low current. I knew that it could sting other corals but I think it's sting must be pretty toxic because it got big enough to reach my long tentacle plate coral and it ended up dieing. I have a candy cane coral that sits pretty close and today I noticed that the edge of it looked kind of burnt. Enough! I removed my bubble and put it in my smaller 12-gallon tank that shares the same water with my 55 but I have compact fluorescents for lighting. The bubble was only out of the water for about 5 seconds. Now what I think about it seems like I may have read somewhere that it's not good for bubble corals to be out of water at all. Anyway my bubble is not doing well. It is omitting something that is brown and stringy and has shriveled up. Is it the lighting or being out of water for 5 seconds. I tried to put it in a similar position in the smaller tank. I really don't like my compact fluorescents much but guess that's another post. Thanks in advance for the feedback. |

It should be fine - that is a typical stress reaction. Give it a few days and it will look normal again - it is just not really happy with you at the moment. The brown stringy stuff is just waste - it does that normally, even if you had never noticed. Being out of the water for that short a time won't hurt it. It just shrivels up in defense. JME/HTH

thanks popcorn. It is looking more like itslf now after the lights have gone out. It always looks like it's trying to turn inside out after lights out. Its funny how some corals put out their tentacles and some retract. You think my candy cane will be ok? are bubble stings one of the more toxic stings?

I honestly don't know - we have a pearl bubble, and it is well isolated, as everything else in that part of the tank has a nasty sting. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
