I want to setup a 46bow in a location where I will not have any more room than 2in. max behind tank and wall. Due to this I looking for options on how to setup tank with enough circ. and filtration for a sucessfull reef. Plans are for a 4-5 in dsb,45pds.of LR,2x96pclighting but my questions revolve around how to create good water flow and how to skim
for good water quality. thanks for any and all ideas. |

I have a 55 with no sump or refugium. I use a Remora Pro HOT skimmer, and four powerheads for water movement. I have a 4" live sand bed and 50 pounds of LR. My parameters are all perfect, and I don't currently have any nuisance algae. I don't use any external filtration of any kind. It can be done.

The problem with HO skimmers is that they don't generally (without modification) surface extract the water. IF you can make some sort of overflow in which the skimmer pump sits, then you water is surface extracted, and life is happy. (You do, however, have to watch your water levels carefulle, or you burn the skimmer pump out when the water level drops below the overflow and runs dry. (makes really annoying noise too). SO what I'm saying is, make an overflow for your skimmer pump, if you go with an intank skimmer, that problem is solved, but I think intank skimmers are ugly (JMO).
