225 gal reef vs 75 gal reef.

Howdy all,

I spend about 5 hours/wk maintaining my 75 gallon. I have a refuge, MH/VHO lighting, skimmer, DSB, 100+ lbs of LR, LPSs, Shrooms, 5 fish, Softies, starfish, etc. I plan to add some SPSs soon.

My question is this:

For those who have large tanks and smaller tanks, how much more work is it to maintain a 225 gallon vs a 75 gallon?

I'm not talking expense, that's not really a big concern for me. I'm also not really worried about setup, either. I just need an idea of how many hours this tank would take out of my day.

I have a 220 gallon. Only 2 things other than cost which would take you longer is scraping algae and water changes. Other than that, All things equal excluding cost...

I had 80 and a 90 gal tanks, now I have a 550 and it's a little less time. I only have to feed, perform one set of water tests, change one set of bulbs etc.

Hi Todd

I Have a 220 and used to have a 90 and Im still setting things on my tank but when I get done there will be very minimal time I will have to spend on it versus the smaller tank! Going with the biggest you can afford definately seems to be more effeciently kept.

I've got this 10 foot section of wall between two rooms: one is the computer room and the other is what I fondly call the cat room (the little beasties like it because it's the quietest part of the house.)

I'm envisioning knocking out the wall and replacing it with a 225 that's veiwable from both sides. I'm not so sure about what that might do to the value of the house if I ever decided to sell.

Hmmm, maybe I need a bigger house.

Thanks for the replies.
