Denitrator???

i've read some articles about denitrators (DIY). it seems fairly easy to build and inexpensive. i was just wondering if it's worth making because as per their design, effluent rate is about 60-90 drips/sec!!
will this be enough to eliminate or reduce nitrate in my 75gal?
thanks.

its much easier to add a few inches of sand to youre tank.you also get the benefit that it isnt just a denitrification zone, its also a nitrification filter.
a sandbed will do wonders for youre water quality ime,and is defintiely the way to go .jmo

I have built one, and am running one on a tank where nitrates are a problem (the tank is overstocked.) It does work, and it helps. But like already said, a sand bed will do just fine. And unless you are having nitrate problems (like me) I wouldn't worry about it.

But if you are interested in building one, they are cheap to build; I made mine for $9, and it is bigger than the $55 one pet warehouse sells. And it is something you can easily do in a evening.

It hurts me terribly to say this but...

"My name is Reinhold, and I agree with organicreefer." Boy that's painful!

With an adequate DSB and occasional water changes, you should have essentially zero nitrates. Do you have any unusual conditions in your tank which could be causing high nitrates?

Talking

Oh God! I hoped you wouldn't see that, organicreefer....

Well, don't get used to it, I'm sure it won't happen for another 500 posts or so.

it makes me feel good how you show your love for each other.
by the way, i'm from the Phil. and $9 relates to about P450. the only thing that's gonna cost me is the 50 ft of airhose. the rest of the materials needed are lying around here.
anyway, i'll probably add more sand and build the coil denitrator to be sure.
my tank is overstocked. it's got fish in it (started FO) and some corals, probably why brown and maroon algae are on the rampage.

thanks a million guys,

jun
