need some good advice
since i got in this forum ive been given awesome advice . .
now basically i just want to see where i am at right now and what would be a good improvement. . ok i have a 66.5 gallon tank with crushed coral substrate (i understand about the DSB and all but its just that all the places i go i cant find and live sand nor detrivore kits. So i stuck to crushed coral. I have a sump with biological filtration on the intake to the sump, a middle refugium with a DSB, soon some caulerpa (preferably racemosa) as soon as i can get some, as well as live rock. It will 2 NO lights on the sump. than there is an outtake to the sump with the ETSS super reef devil (soon) i have eheim filter wet/dry 2227 and 3 additional power heads moving water in the tank. I dont have as much LR as i should but ill get some more soon. . i have and RO and will get a DI attachement soon. thats about it is there anything that im missing, what r some other possible ways of me getting algae? |

youre not stuck with crushed coral, put sand in youre tank even if you cant find live sand ,alot of critters will migrate to the sand from the live rock ,and you can add sand eating cukes, and hermits to keep it turned over(there are other choices too...pistol shrimp, sand sifting gobies, brittle stars,etc,etc.).eventually(after you get youre skimmer running and a dsb, start removing it imo) i would ditch the wet dry its not needed.
what about youre cleanup crew ?how old is the tank?fish population? |

Yes Yes....give us more input about your tank....write a book if you have to
I agree w/ OR you should redo your substrate from CC to a DSB and go to www.ipsf.com and get a detrivore kit....you can also get some macroalgae from them as well. |

Agreed,
Ditch the W/D. Eventually if you do your sump/refugium correctly you won't even need a skimmer. I found that out myself. I had a RemoraPro on my 72g. Once my refugium began working, the skimmer stopped. The refugium, with it's natural filtration of caulerpa, LR, LS actually out competed the skimmer. As for sand, when I setup our 135g I started with about 3/4 "dead" sand and topped it off w/ live sand from Premium Aquatics. The tank is 1 year old now and VERY healthy. And do check out ipsf.com . They've got some great stuff. I've purchased from them on a number of occasions. BTW, one of my "mistakes" with my first tank(72g) was to lay down a crushed coral substrate. Needless to say, I no longer have a CC substrate. I replaced it all w/ live aragonite sand. Just something I learned. If I can replace all that while maintaining my critters in the tank, you can too my friend. ![]() HTH

THANKS
all this info
THANKs ok so im still gonna get my skimmer cuz my tank isnt develloped enough. . im getting the turboflotor 1000 in my refuge, other than aragonite sand, LR, and caulerpa what should i put ok ill take out the crushed coral, ill try and siphon it out (if there is like a bit left on the bottom will it do anything)? my cleanup crew is very small 5 snails and 5 crabs. . i dont want any fish cuz they will just die cuz of all the moving around i am doing in my tank. I need more LR badly but im shotrt on $$ cuz of the skimmer i will be getting icecap 660 soon so i can run some goood reef im gonna keep the wet dry ne way cuz it holds bacteria any way and plus it has a built in wave maker. . so theres nothing really wrong with it ne more input is very much appreciated |
