Colt Coral Finances My Tank

I have a lowly Colt coral which is now the size of a basketball. I have just cut my 14th cutting from it.

I trade my Colt cuttings at the LFS for other corals of equal value. The Colts are then sold for $40 a piece.

$560 from one simple coral!

Reinhold, How are you getting the colts to attach themselves to rock? I have a large colt, and have tried making 2 frags from it, never got them to stick to any rockwork. But they are floating around the tank and appear to be as healthy as a floating colt could be.

I use a large sewing needle and 17 pound test monofilament fishing line to tie them to a piece of LR rubble, preferably a piece with a depression in it for the Colt stalk to rest in.

I use two ties at 90 degrees to each other for 4 point fixation. It usually takes about 6-8 weeks for the Colt frag to really stick down.

They are just too slimey for any glues or other methods to work. I've tried toothpicks through the base, but they tear away from the toothpick within a week. The monofilament seems to be inert enough that it doesn't cause any tissue reaction.

Thanks!

I may just have to give that a tie (try)

I agree about the slimyness, they are terrible.

Yea, I traded some xenia, anthelia, brown star polyps and some mangroves for 1 large torch and 1 large frogspawn.

I intend to keep the fragging up!

I can wheel and deal if given the opportunity.

I am trading a LFS a sump, (2) mogul sockets, (2) 8month old Iwaski 250's, (1) dual 96w pc ballast and (2)96w lampsnow actinic's. Not to mention my labor and my expertise (god thats scary ) I should have a sizable credit.

This guy wants to set up a reeftank in his shop. He has SW but kills all the corals he gets in. Of corse he is lighting them with a shop light He can keep fish alive, but thats it. I have known the guy for a long time, and he is honest enough to ask for help. I gladly extended the knowledge. I will also be able to steer him in ordering sw stuff, so maybe I can keep him from ordering (3) goniopora's and all the crap that dies. He is one of (2) shops that I view as if you dont buy it as soon as it arrives they will kill it within the week.

This guy offered some time ago to sell me a tank at cost. He placed the offer with me when I was trying to make up my mind on the starphire. I could have gotten a aga cheap.

I do the same with my colt, i have 4 seperate colonies which i alternately frag, last weekend i made $90.00 from 5 frags. what i do is attach the frag to a rock with a rubbberband and after about 1 week to 10 days i can usually remove the band or just take it to the lfs with rubberband and all. so far in the last two months my tank paid for a replacement 6ft URI VHO and one month of my electric bill.
