DSB & All-Glass Twin Flow Overflow

I'm wondering how deep a sandbed people have if they have this kind of overflow. The All-Glass overflow system has inlet openings at the bottom of the overflow wall & if your sandbed is very deep you can cover these openings. What's everyone's feeling on this?

You can slope your sandbed so that one end is deeper and the other is just below the inlets. The front sand against the glass looks level but it has a slight slope to the back cornor. Once you place some rock there you will not be able to tell it is sloped. HTH

I have an AG w/twin overflow and my sand bed is over 4" deep. I filled the sand up to the bottom intake on the overflows in the back but my sand bed is not level and it is deeper in some areas. I think I read somewhere that someone (on the board??) covered the bottom intakes with a strip of plastic. So far I haven't seen a reason to do this at this time. One problem though is my clownfish likes to dig a hole in one corner and the sand and silt is sucked into the overflow.
I never tried to just cover it with sand- don't know what if anything would happen.

If you fill your tank up to the bottom notches of the bottom overflow inlets, it will only allow 3 inches of sand in that area. I measured it, as I had this problem when I started. Even when I sloped that sand, inevitably, the sand is slowly sucked out of the tank through that overflow. I have not solved this problem to date. I like the idea of the extra flow in the bottom of the tank, so I just let that side go at 3 inches. Fancy rockwork will/can hide that. I didn't want to cover the opening and defeat the purpose. If only they'd raise the notches a little higher!
