Post 250watt Iwasakis

I would like to put 2-250watt 6500k iwasakis (sp?) on a 55 gallon tank. Would the tank look really yellow if I did not use any actinic supplementation???

The_Saltwater_kid,

Hi. I am using 2X250 watt Iwasakis on an 80 gallon with 2 VHO 95 watt ActinicBlues. Without the VHO's actinic supplementation, my tank looks a little yellow, but not too yellow. YOu need to get the DL listed bulbs, labeled for DayLights. It is best to supplement the Metal Halides with either PC/or other fluorescents, to fade out the yellowness. However, my metal halides have not burnt in yet, so it will probably get whiter as I use them more.

Overall, metal halides rock!! and seems to make everything thrive.

Regards,
Ilham

A little trick I've heard about and have been thinking about trying. I'm told the Iwasaki bulbs are actually mercury vapor bulbs that can run reliably on a metal halide ballast. They run even BETTER on a mecury vapor ballast. In fact, the color is described as more crisp white - one person even said it was almost blue white. I haven't seen it for myself but it sounds interesting. Anyway, Reefers ( www.acropora.com ) sells a PFO ballast for Iwasaki bulbs ONLY - this is apparently a mercury vapor ballast.
